Pontao Menezes 2016
acrylic on canvas (100cm x 80cm)
A fuelling station on the Rio Negro, Brazil. Developed from sketches and photographs recorded on a boat off Manaus early to mid morning. As Manaus is roughly halfway up the Amazon, river boat is the main form of transport and the station rises and falls with the height of the river. Being close to the equator there are some vibrant colours at work but the scene reminded me of Edward Hopper's painting Early Sunday Morning notably the specific sense of light, place and time.
